Secara etimologis, kata qira'at berarti bacaan, masdar dari qara'a. Dari sisi terminologis, Az Zarqani memberikan pengertian qira 'at sebagai suatu madzhab yang dianut oleh seorang imam dalam membaca Al-Qur'an yang berbeda satu dengan yang lainnya dalam pengucapan Al-Qur'an, disepakati riwayat dan jalur-jalurnya, baik perbedaan itu dalam pengucapan huruf maupun dalam pengucapan lafazhnya.
